I need to buy a box of 'compressed charcoal' for my art course. Presumably it's different from the light, thin sticks of charcoal?

    Yes your right, its different. Compressed charcoal is sold in rectangular sticks that reassemble pastels. Conte and Generals are two common brands but theres others.
