Question

Help answer this question below.

Since the thinking at that time was "America First" and isolationism, do you think that FDR lied to the American people and kept information from them that led us into WWII? And, if so, do you think that he did the right thing?

It has been said that the Roosevelt administration was perplexed at the decade-long economic depression that gripped the U.S. and the world...and there were no signs of recovery. An all-out war was looked upon as a possible solution...but the majority of the American people had no desire for war. The mindset was if we were left alone, we'd leave you alone, even if you are evil to others.

Japan had invaded China at the time. Longer term, we were concerned that Japan would eventually link up with the Axis powers of Europe and it would be too late to defeat them. As an affront, we cut off oil/fuel supplies to Japan. It was this action that provoked Japan to come after us. It has been speculated that Roosevelt suspected and hoped that Japan would attempt to inflict a painful penalty on us, thereby unifying the then isolationist-thinking population of the U.S. against Japan and be more willing to go to war against Japan and Hitler, as well. Did Roosevelt and his administration know that Japan was on their way to hit the U.S. Hawaii or, worse, even our westcoast mainland? Some say yes.

Whatever...we were victorious against the evilness of Hitler and friends and Japan, as well. Estimates of over 40 million souls died as a result of that war. Estimates, in fact, have been as high a 70 million.

And what is know as The Great Depression came to its end.

A excellent question, by the way. I was born in 1938 and can remember much of this period.

As to whether President Roosevelt did the right thing, I believe that he did. Try and imagine ot if he hadn't acted a he did.
