It could be because " function follows form". Otherwise I would want to know why a bugle or trumpet cannot make the sound that a Tuba makes. Now I am going to go on a limb, maybe the long sound waves of a "roar" cannot fit in the mouth of the small cat. Some Tom's can sound pretty husky but it is not quite the roar of a lion, the roar is also accompanied by another stimulus that makes it a roar rather that I yelling" roar, roar, roooaar", at you. The long sound waves also vibrate through the ground and you will still know a lion just roared if deaf. The house cat has the most complete purr cycle of the cats. Purr is continuous weather taking a breath in or out. The big cats purr a variation of the house cat. Some on the breathing in only and others on exhale. The domestic cat is the final product of the evolution of cats. It comes in third for multiplying, and that is behind number one and two which are not lovable, roaches and rats. Big cats have their kingdoms in the jungle but the house cat took over the earth, establishing medical care and other goodies that is but a dream in the wild. The domestic can kill more species of animals that any other big cat (advertising how easy I am when I join your family) (did I mention I prefer being fed?). House cats kill anything that moves from the size of a gnat to cotton tail rabbits. That is 1500 hundred or so on the menu. They are the only animal WHO LIKES TO HUNT JUST AS SOME HUMANS do, for sport! for fun! after a big canned lunch! Finally, the meek ( the weakest smallest of the cat family ) inherited the earth a few centuries ago while the rest are forced into smaller parts of the planet. We know how that will pan out.

    • There is no evolutionary 'final product'. Even us.
