Not to pick nits, but the Puritans were Christians. Another difficulty is that they were fleeing persecution for their beliefs that they should be allowed to persecute their own members beyond what the law would allow. Of course, the United States of America wasn't founded by the Puritans.

think that the Puritans turned out to be worse than the people we left England to escape!

Religions change, the puritans that fled England had no intention of persecuting their members. On arriving in Virginia they set up an colony 'guided by God' and THAT is where persecution started. Soon only puritans could hold office in the colonial administration and a growing number of secular professions were also restricted to puritans only ("you want the shopkeeper to be an honest god-fearing Christian, dont you?").
It got so bad that people fled in drowes, And that is a big part of the history the founding father learned from in setting up their new nation.
By the way one of the people who fled was called Roger Williams, He then founded his own colony on Rhode Island. He is generally considered the founding father of Baptism in the US. Williams was the first to use the phrase "wall of separation" to describe the relationship of the church and state. He called for a high wall of separation between the "Garden of Christ" and the "Wilderness of the World." Initially in a sermon named "The Garden and the Wilderness". I have been unable to find a copy of it, and that is a shame as Baptism also have changed quite a bit since then.
