Yes, we are, and there's a direct correlation in the US between the deregulation of prescription medication ads in the mid-late 90's and the spike in prescriptions. It doesn't help that most Americans would rather take a pill than do the work that would probably have the same effect. There are legitimate reasons out there for needing prescription medication, but most of us could imporve our lives significantly with lifestyle changes.

    • Well, you are almost right. There is a real gain to be made for the costs of the health care system when prescription drugs are prescribed and then used properly.

The spike is also related to increased use of pharmaceuticals in lieu of hospitalization. And it actually works to the benefit of the patient.

Believe it or not, major benefit plans have seen an immense drop in the cost of hospitalization as the rate of prescription use has gone up. Proper medication is keeping people out of hospitals and allowing shorter visits when hospitalization is unavoidable.

Take your meds, and take them religiously as directed.
