Most likely cause of testicular pain

Well my boyfriend has had pain in 1 of his testicles for about 3 months now (though he only just told me). He's seeing a doctor and all but I want to know what the most likely causes of it are, there's no swelling/redness or anything, just pain which only goes when he takes his mind off it, please help. Thanks. (Thought I should add he's 17)

If it is a dull ache that bothers him when he is standing or walking it may be a varicocele (varicose vein to the testicle). I had them, and they are quite uncomfortable. With today's medicine they can be repaired.
