What are your feelings about female 'preachers' in Christianity? Should they be allowed, despite the Bible being against women teaching religion? (NB I'm not against them, I've just read an article that is and I wondered how many Christians felt the same)

I am not a Christian but I don't see why women should not preach. In the Bible Jesus appeared to women first after his resurection and entrusted the important task of telling his other disciples of his resurection. He preached to women as well as men.

Yes, there is quite a lot of sexism in the Bible (for example "I permit no women to teach or have authority over men, she is to keep silent" ) but I think you have to take it in the context of the time the texts were written. Sexism was prevalent and widespread then, but times move on. Did Jesus himself ever specifically forbid women in the Bible from preaching? Not to my knowledge.

    • exactly , you are not a Christian, and in so being you do not FOLLOW the word....God, and HIS word are UNCHANGING. It does not change just because it is "2008." Jeremish 6:16 ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein.
The Commandments did not change in the New Testament, just the covenant.

    • Wow - be HARSH on the poor person for speaking intelligently! I agree, a non-believer can't give a definitive answer to a topic thay have not studied, BUT, they DID state they were not Christian. This secular position is EXACTLY what the liberal Catholic Church is teaching in college these days. Good to know why others think as they do.

    • Sometimes outsiders have a clearer perspective than those who are emotionally invested in the matter. Tom appeals to both the scripture and a historical understanding of Biblical society to support his claims, so he seems to have studied the matter. I see nothing wrong with his answer.

    • I am a Christian and Tom has a great answer. It was Paul, not Jesus or God who said, "women shall not teach." His view was sexist and just me you are right GOD'S WORD is unchanging, but Paul was human not God. Jesus did not tell Paul to speak this, Paul said it of his own opinion of what women's roles should be. And shame on you, just because he is not a believer does not give you the right to demean and talk down to him. No wonder Christians have such a bad rap in today's world. We are taught to love others as God loves s. As far as I know it's not, "Live other believers as I have loved you." You're supposed to be setting an example of how Christ wants us to be. We are no better than anyone else. Or only difference is we have seen the truth and accepted was Jesus has done for s and non-believers are still lost. You should inform not scold, discuss not argue.

    • i have no problem with Tom's intelligent comments, EXCEPT for his concepts,(which true Christain women understand) of how SEXIST, these and the women ,of this "bias of God" toward women...the uninformed can't just say it was Paul....God favored many RIGHTEOUS women,Deborah,Miriam,Hannah, Esther,Ruth,etc...just not with the Leader Power of the Men;Abraham,Moses,etc...there are many examples and reasons WHY HE DID ...it started with EVE!!!!! men are to LEAD and be Head's of earthly families, household and Godly... sorry ,some are mad at the scolding, but this is obviously not a part of God they understand..just want to CONDEMN the Almighty's WAY..Justme

    • 1Cor.14:34-35 Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience as also saith the law.

No political correctness in the bible.
