Never ever use any sort of metal polish (Brasso, Silver-o etc). Never ever.

It is a good idea, however, to rub your instrument over gently with a soft cloth to remove fingerprints, water marks, and other blemishes to keep it nice and shiny.

If your instrument has lost its lacquer coating and now has a matt finish, you should take it to an experienced instrument repairer to have it restored. Though some players argue that the tone is much improved when the instrument isn't shiny.
