Yes. In fact, it's now common practice (pronounced "paranoia") to prohibit passengers from standing up and moving about during some parts of American flights, even more so than before 9/11. Of course, before 9/11, these precautions happened for very practical reasons involving turbulence, and the impact of landing, which might very possibly have an impact on the passenger's health as his head impacts a luggage rack. *grin*

Now, the elevated restrictions are to prevent "terrorists" from walking about and possibly getting nearer to the pilots' cabin before their intentions are known.

Sadly, this means alot of people crossing their legs & turning purple from the effort of holding back the flood, for VERY long periods, as the airplanes take off (full of explosive fuel) or pass near "potential terrorist targets"....and yes, it's led to some arrests as the result of some people (quite rightly) saynig "forget this ! When ya gotta go, ya gotta go. I can't hold it any longer."

You may also be interested in "no-fly lists" (extensive lists of people who're considered possible terrorists, and are therefore not allowed to fly). Senator Ted Kennedy (D-Mass) spent 2 weeks on that list, just last month !!!

You may also be interested in mutual-mistrust between nations, which has also caused a few arrests. By this, I mean that passengers from some countries, uch as Brazil, are atomatically suspect and fingerprinted when they fly into the USA. This has led to a backlash from some countries, who decided to fingerprint all incoming Americans in THEIR contry, as payback. This has led to at least 2 Americans being arrested, detained, and deported in Brazil, for giving "the finger" to Brazilian authorities during the fingerprinting process.

*sigh*-- so much paranoia, so little time !

    • Good answer - the last bit makes you wonder why so many countries dislike the US doesn't it? :p

    • Yes~ I agree with Tina Anderson~~maybe the people won't disobey the instructions of the flight crew when they are put in jail for being an a hole
