"Wind before rain, let the top sail (or topsail) remain." Has anyone heard of this saying from the days of sailing?

You're reading If you were in a sailboat in a category 5 hurricane in the middle of the ocean, would you easily survive?

could you be more specific on how you would die in the sail boat exactly how would the waves destroy the boat, i was in an argument with a friend and he swore if you locked the hatch, "you could ride out the storm in the cabin" witch i think not

Even with the hatches locked, theres a possibility that the waves could damage the sailboat, such as the mast falling and crashing into the sailboat. Is that happens and theres a big gap in the boat, then waves will flood the boat leading to abaondon ship

perfect storm was in a powerboat, not a sail boat. The keel makes you way safer.they find boats still afloat after severe weather abandoned by the crew.

Yes, you would probably survive. You wouldn't be happy though. You must batten down the hatches and go below. Put everything away so you don't get creamed by a can of tomatoes. The boat could tip over so be prepared for that. You might not be able to sail it when you're through but you could live. AND REMEMBER in The Perfect Storm, there was that guy in a sailboat with those women. They made him leave it and the next week he found his sailboat on the beach. it was banged up, but it would have saved their lives.
