Why are spies & mercenaries often portrait in TV/Films wearing an eye patch,wouldn't that make them less affective killing machines?

Well, to be an effective fighter one remembers prescibed moves and countermoves thus the limiting of vision probably would'ent make them any less efficient if their already know their stuff.
