I can speak and write fluently 6 languages (English, French, Italian, German, Portuguese and Spanish) and I have a conversational level in the my 7th language (Russian). I learn 4 of them in 3 years by living abroad... and I'm 27. This means that proportionally when I'll be 72 I'll speack 67 languages (do the math).... in the meanwhile I have sex and enjoy life. So you don't need to be a pope to speak several languages.
Italian, Spanish and Portuguese are so similar that once you learn one of them you can learn the others in 3 months without studying it. For French in one year you speak it very well and then it gets better with time...
