It's called "Voila, an American Dream", and it was written by Rodney Crowell. He recorded it in 1978 with Emilou Harris. Most people, including me, are much more familiar with a recording by Linda Ronstadt and Nitty Gritty Dirt Band--I think they just called it "American Dream"--that was a fair hit. One list I saw ranked it at #13 in 1980. So maybe you're thinking of the Crowell/Harris recording--the two ladies's voices could pretty easily be mistaken for one another. And who knows? Maybe Linda sang it with Rodney sometime or other.
