First two creatures that come to mind for me:
1) hyper-intelligent jellyfish that used complex chemical signals to manipulate the environment around it and used biological tools on a planet 95% liquid
2) four limbed land carnivore that were either tentacles or hands that used complex gestures to communicate and lived in trees and could curl up into balls sort of like the critters
That's just for starters.
