thanks for your answer, I do agree with the logic behind your reasoning, I take it that you are basicaly refering to natural selection, that is in itself based on logical choices. My concern is more with what I consider irational behavior. As in why people will put themselves at a disadvantage financialy in order to feel artificialy superior or at the least "fit in".

Well there are a few things at play here. But it comes down to human nature. We are naturally looking for "better ways" to do things. It is what motivates our entire culture. It is an ideal of western philosophy to continuously build up...
People put themselves in strange predicaments to keep up with the mythical "joneses" in american society. Much of this has to do with the fact that our economy is based on the power of the consumer. Our entire culture is focused and I dare say obsessed with things, gadgets, large vehicles, and all sorts of excess...
We are aculturated to the ideal, of work, and spend. With advertising running our daily lives.
We are bombarded at every waking corner to purchase something that is faster, stronger and sleeker...
Try to make it to work without a single advertising hitting you in the face... Whether it be a billboard advertising the most expensive vodka in the store, or the morning news giving you 8 to 12 minutes of commercials in a 1/2 hour news program.... drive your car and turn you radio and the explicit messages continue...
They follow you all the way back to your computer, and sneak up on you in your daily newspaper, or magazine you may read... and walking down the street their are walking talking billboards wearing glasses with name brands showing and jeans...
Well you get the drift. It is the American Culture that as breed the insatiable appetite of the American consumer. And it gives them the tools to be gluttons, by the ease of receiving a credit card and a loan.
