Is it impractical to ride a mtn bike on lengthy street paths that have minimal dirt shoulders, or should I have purchased a street bike?

    With long hardpack or street riding, you should make sure to have the proper tires which would have a solid/connected center tread for low rolling resistance. You'll find that track bikes coast forever while mountain bikes do not and this is mostly due to rolling resistance from more aggressive tread patterns.
