Lennon's albums top the charts with Imagine at #1 in '71, Mind Games at #9 in '73 and Walls And Bridges at #1 which included his only solo #1 hit, Whatever Gets You Thru The Night, with Elton John (as well as a track with his son Julian Lennon) in '74. Elton John had remarked to Lennon that if Whatever Gets You Thru The Night went to #1, Lennon would have to perform with Elton on stage. Lennon took him up on the offer and when the song charted at #1, Lennon fulfilled his promise and joined Elton on stage at the Madison Square Gardens.

This would be the last time Lennon would perform live on stage. Lennon contributed to Elton John's version of The Beatles' Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds which charted at #1 in '74. Lennon also cowrote with David Bowie and Carlos Alomar the song Fame which was Bowie's first #1 U.S. hit. He would also log in many sessions with Ringo Starr and Harry Nilsson. Except for Shaved Fish, a greatest hits compilation, Rock And Roll, which reached #6 in '75 would be Lennon's last solo release during his lifetime. Right before his death in 1980, John and Yoko's album, Double Fantasy, went #1 along with the first single from the album, (Just Like) Starting Over which also went to #1.
