What is the best age for a teenager to have a cellphone and why?

    I think it depends what they want it for. A lot of teenagers just want one as a fashion accessory first and as a means of communication second. I used to work with kids and they were *always* playing with their phones and showing them off, but I hardly ever saw any of them use the phones to make a call or text someone.

    However, I do think it's a good idea for children to have a way to contact their parents and vice versa, so I would say when a teenager is allowed to go out on their own, even to school, then that is old enough to have a phone. I would get an old one though, so it is only used for it's intended purpose (communication) and not as an accessory and use a pay-as-you-go one rather than a contract.

    • I agree with you I drive a bus and every one has one, it seems to be for show, and these kids have the most expensive phones you can buy

    • It really depends, but I think 11 or 12 is most appropriate time. It's when they get to middle school and are exposed to whole lot of new, exciting and dangerous situations. i got my kid the prepaid NET10 LG300G phone which is an inexpensive simple phone with no fncy features. I pay about $15 per month for 150 minutes of use (.10 cents a minute and .3 cents a text). So far it's been perfect especially cause he pays for his minutes from his own allowance. This is another reason why this is the perfect age to introduce them to the cell phone, it teaches them the basics of budgeting and management!

    • thank you! XD I always had to pay to get my own phone. Although if my mom read your answer she would probably get me one of those old army backpack phones you wind up. Try texting in class with THAT!
