There have been many difficult things: Watching mother die of emphysema, watching dad die of esophageal cancer (both due to cigarettes) are both high on the list. But they were able to have some control and certain choices they made played a role in their suffering and demise. Making the decision to have our loving animals put to sleep through the years has been almost the worst because they were at our mercy and could not really communicate with us with words. But, the most difficult thing of all that I have ever done was telling my two daughters, 14 and 10, that their mother and I were splitting up. That was 34 years ago but I'm still haunted by the looks on their faces and the sound of their crying. Though "things' seem to have worked out for the best, there I times when I still feel like a first class prick over it.
