Excommunication/disfellowshipment is simply a disciplinary action when members have committed serious sins. It is not supposed to be a punishment. In fact, we want them to repent of their sins and then come back. These members must be re-baptized and confirmed in order to enjoy the blessings of the gospel. As Glenn points out, there are some exceptions.
