As a professional pilot, my understanding is that 'transonic' defines the speed range between airflow first becoming supersonic over part of the aircraft structure and all flow becoming supersonic.
For example, air accelerated around any bulging part of the airframe will become supersonic and form a small shock before the aircraft exceeds the local speed of sound.
The reason for wing sweep is to delay the onset of transonic flow and its associated drag rise.
If you want any more I'd have to get the books out :)
