You're reading My daughters laptop gets so hot you can't set it in your lap to work because it will burn your legs, then it's shuts off. It even melted the plug that you use to get wall power. Is this something that I can get fixed, or just trash it and get a new one?

I agree. It may be the battery, especially if this is a new problem (didn't happen when new).
