Why was polygamy practiced in the LDS Church? There are two reasons...1.It was command by the Lord. 2.Through Joseph Smith all things from Adam through the New Testament Church was restored back to the earth.

One of those things which was restored was the New and Everlasting Covenant of Marriage, which also includes plural marriage. In order to truly restore polygamy it needed to be practiced for a time.

By 1890 the Church had been brought to a standstill. The government had confiscated all our properties, including the Temple. The Lord told Wilford Woodruff it was more important to continue the work for the dead in the Temple than to live polygamy, so he released the Saints from practicing polygamy.

The Government released our buildings and we ceased to practice polygamy from that time till now.

When did it officially start? Joseph Smith was commanded as early as 1831, but he did not want to live this principle and put it off as long as he could. In 1834 an Angel appeared to him with a drawn sword demanding he began immediately living this principle or suffer death on the spot. Joseph agreed and took his first plural wife shortly thereafter.

By whom was it taught? By Joseph Smith and all the succeeding Prophets until Wilford Woodruff who issued a manifesto in 1890, when it ceased to be practiced. ...Later

    • Oh but it didn't cease in 1890. Partly beacause they thought Christ would return in around 1891 - even an apostle was later excommunicated for still practising polygamy. Many polygamous marriages were still entered into by the church leadership.

    • Joseph Smith never taught or practised Polygamy, he fought against it all of his live. Jacob Cochran was the 1st religous leader who practised Polygamy. Many early converts to Mormonism were from his sect. Nowhere was it written from the pen of Joseph while he was alive that he recieved insruction from God or angel of God to practise Polygamy. Dr. John C. Bennett who was associated with the Prophet taught secretely Spiritual Wifery indicating that Joseph taught him that doctrine. Bennett used this primaily to seduce and have engage in sexual activity with many unsuspecting women. Bennett was eventaully excommunicated from the Church. Brigham and several of the other Apostle's were practicing Polygamy. Joseph condemend this practise and recevied revelation D&C 63:13-15 condeming it. D&C 132 was not placed into the D&C until 1876, at which time the original marriage covenant located in sec 101 (1835 edition) and sec 104 (in latter editions until 1876). a portion of this original reads as: In as much as the Church of Christ has been repoached with the crime of fornication and polygamy we delcare that we believe that one man should have one wife and that one woman should have but one husband except in the case of death when either is at liberty to marry again.

Unfortunately what is being taught in the LDS Church today is not what is taught in the Original Restored Church of April 6, 1830. which followed the teachings of Holy Bible, Book Of Mormon, and Doctine and Covenants 1844 edition.
