Replace the Hard Drive
I would crack the hard drive open to see if it is a standardized hard drive. If so, I would try to replace it for cheaper...if that won't work then I go buy me a new one..
Has anyone ever used an online service that buys broken xbox 360's? I'm just trying to find a sure and safe one.

even if the components are standard, the interface is not. and knowing XBOX even if he has the level aptitude to make a XBOX/standard HD adaptor, there is probably some firmware required to Xbox to use the HDD, just like the xbox camera, they put serious effort into making a software mod to prevent people from using standard webcams on their xbox.
