The average response time of the police is 8 minutes. Guns are used 2.5 million times a year in self defense.

    • They are only used, because other people have them too.
And they have them for the same reason You do, that it's allowed.

    • @ T, criminals do not have guns because they are allowed. They own illegal guns. I have a friend in law enforcement, you would be amazed at the number of stolen military guns that are confiscated.

    • You're talking about big time criminals who take care
of prostitution, drug deals, shop/bank roberies, etc.

I don't think some average house burglar or pickpocket
has a gun. Not in my country at least. They might have
a knife, but not a gun. And usually they work with
stealth, not force. They are not interested in killing
anyone, they want to be invisible and if discovered
      will run away.

    • In the US, many petty criminals carry guns, most are illegal. Also, in the US we have criminals coming from South Central and South American countries that are ruthless. They are willing to kill over almost anything. Most of them are involved in gangs and drugs, but not all of them. The are all armed with illegal guns.

    • In a country of guns, it's easy to get guns, both legal
and illegal. Because the question is, where do those illegal
guns come from? From the same people who sell legal guns?
Or from abroad? If the latter, then how come Your borders
are leaking so much? Is the US government involved in this?

Either way, if that's the fact, then like I already said
in a different comment thread, I feel compassion for US
citizens, if the place You live in is full of criminals,
everyone carrying guns, including the petty ones and
all of them willing to kill for no reason.

In my city (population ~1,7 mln) in 2008 there was 38 murders.
1 murder in the district I have my apartement in and 6 in the
other district (center) I spend most of my time in when not
      in the apartement.

    • Our border contol is terrible. The gov is trying to fix it. The US has thousands of miles of borders, most of it in rugged, uninhabitated country, which makes control difficult. Our neighbors to the south make it even more difficult, with less control than ours and rampant corruption.

    • I applaud those who do not need guns in their society. Even highly trained individuals have difficulty stopping violent crimminals. Just for the record, try drawing, loading, then pointing and firing a weapon. (try it at a gun range I don't want people trying this at home) I'll bet you that a crimminal with a knife or loaded gun can cover up to 21 feet to get the drop on you, harm you, or take your weapon from you and use it on you.

    • I am experience with handguns. I can draw, chamber a round and aim the weapon in a few seconds. It is all done in one motion. I would not carry an unloaded weapon.

    • I do agree with you, I applaud those who do not need guns in their society too. But to get to that situation here, the criminal element would need to be better controlled in the US first.

Well, wish You luck with that.
Maybe if the American government decided to use their army
and the resources spent on invading other countries on internal
      security, it would get better.

      @Anonymous
My sentiments exactly. I believe more people will be killed
for trying to resist with a weapon than will peoples lives
be saved through the use of a gun. (in a situation where
      not defending would cause death)
Not mentioning that my private opinion is that increased
aggressive behaviour and weapon ownership in a country
will just increase the hate and mistrust between people
thus increasing crime. Not only making more people die
in effect, but also creating a very dense atmosphere
of fear and mistrust between people. That makes up
for social dissolution. Especially so in a country
that is not ethnically uniform, like USA.

    • Anonymous T, I know that I am coming to this discussion late, but you keep referring to your country without stating what country that is. Would you care to reveal what country that is?

As for your belief that more people are killed by taking up arms to resist a criminal than would be saved by doing so, that belief is not born out by actual studies.

The problem is that it is crime that get news coverage. The old saw, "If it bleeds, it leads" has a lot of truth to it. Someone being shot to death during a robbery is a lot more interesting than someone merely brandishing a gun to scare off a would-be attacker. Additionally, someone driving off a would-be attacker by merely pointing a gun at him is not likely to report such an incident to police let alone make it into the news. Therefore, we get a skewed idea as to just how guns are used. We hear about all of the crime that is perpetrated by people using guns, but we don't hear about the greater numbers of times that crime is prevented by the use of a gun. That's one of the reasons why I like the following site. It collects the stories that the press buries concerning people who use guns to defend themselves and these are just the few that actually get reported.

    • Poland.

You know what? I have enough of this topic. Guns will never be allowed in my country, they do not belong and nobody wants them, so not like it's my problem anyway.

Though what I believe is that guns are part of what creates the American culture. And this culture makes people kill more people than in many other countries. Maybe in this culture of violence that morally allows people to kill each other, the only thing that works to decrease crime is giving people fear of others.

Who knows? Though in the end You would have to answer, why is the murder rate in USA so high?
