When did we start calling them rabbits as oppossed to hares.
    .
Way, way back, i was taught in school that rabbits were primarily the bunies that live in the wild (there are exceptions) while domestic bunnies tend to be hares.
    .
I believe hares have shorter ears and maybe there were some other differences.
    .
We keep some hares but most are crosses. We have a pure bred California buck, but the rest are crosses.

    • Rabbits and hares are very different. Rabbits are born naked, eyes closed and must stay in a nice arm nest made by their mother. They can be wild rabbits like cottontails and other breeds. And there are domestic rabbits, too, descended from European wild stock.

Hares are born fully furred and with their eyes open, able to run and move from birth. They are not born in a hole in the ground, but in a shallow depression. Usually they have very long erect years and are not as 'chunky built as rabbits. There are some domestic rabbits that are called hares, that are not hares, like the Belgian hare. It's a rabbit. And the jackrabbit is actually a hare.
