no it's not barbaric...it's the god wisedom
this is the only solution to protect your money and your life .. i love this nice verse that god explain why he order us to (kill who kill and cut the hand that steal)
2:179 ((And there is (a saving of) life for you in Al-Qisas (the Law of Equality in punishment), O men of understanding, that you may become Al-Muttaqun (the pious - see V.2:2)))
the verse in Arabic is mush nicer .. it's written in the way like if i say ( you have a life in killing ) .. (you have a ..... in anti ....)
becuae if we know that the punishment will be cutting our hand .. no body will steal .. no boey will kill

You're reading Is it true that in the Qur'an in sura 5:38, Islamic law requires the severing of hands of thieves who steal more than a quarter of a dinar value of goods? Isn't that too cruel and barbaric?

Doesn't seem to be working out to well!

yes because the law of most islamic countries is not the law of Islam .. except in my country (Saudi Arabia) As i know
and i works well here..
by the way .. there is exceptions of this law in Islam such as:
1- Poors
2- who steal less than qurtet dinar (about 15$)
3- who steal un-protected stuff ..e.g. an open car on the road without any driver !!
in these cases the punishment is not cutting hand but rather other punishments such as prison, laching, ..etc.

What is wrong about the punishment is that offenders can learn to repent and not steal without having their hands cut off. By cutting their hand off you deprive them of the opportunity to work.

If the right hand is cut off they can work with their left hand. Simple.

Something less than a goat. As Talim said: Even goats have feelings.
