Would someone from the U.K. (I'm from the U.S) kindly explain the definition of a "wanker"? Is it profanity?

Whilst wanker literally means masturbator it is a casual insult intended to mean that the person is simply a waste of time, pathetic, ineffectual etc., It's become so 'normal' it's no longer considered too rude even for kids to say - and unfortunately lots of them do!

    • I tend to agree. It's not exactly a common term here in Canada but when it is used it's not exactly meant as an insult since it's employed within a circle of pals more often than not.

    • Yes, I agree. Or it's used by a male who feels disparaging towards another male, usually because that one is seen as 'unmanly' in some way, e.g he's untrustworthy, unreliable or lazy etc.,

    • Nah..we have better words for that :)
Wanker is sort of knockdown endearment here not used in a war of words.
