Why might an ex-lover call you after not being in touch for a long time, and then just disappear again?

I have done this to an ex-boyfriend before and well, reason 1-to see how he was doing
2-closure and 3-most of all forgiving myself and him for the past.

- Agreed.closure phone calls do help and also safeguard future calls when you are with someone else.This i agree with
