Study the religion, not the people. Many people carry the title of a Muslim, but not all of them truly practice Islam as much as they practice their unislamic cultural practices. To some culture seems to be more important than the beautiful way of life known as Islam.

If a thousand men call themselves "sloopimen" (made up name), and every one of them wears a bright orange hat, it is fair of me to say, "Sloopimen seem to wear bright orange hats a lot!"
If Muslim countries are hideously oppressive to women, then whether or not they are following (in your opinion) the original texts, faithfully, that is what Islam entails. By going on the "no true scotsman" argument, you derail moondawgie's (valid) point, that in PRACTICE, women are treated like shit by Muslims. Not all. But enough to make that a valid observation.
