What were the popular scare tactics (bogeymen, monsters, etc.) used by adults during your childhood?

    We had a lot. Growing up in the Philippines we would hear about the most improbable occurrences. For example:

    Tyanak: a monster infant (no joke) supposed to prevent you from digging in garbage cans where these babies lurked.

    Aswang: a woman-creature that separates from her lower half at night to fly around searching for little children to eat. This is obviously something you tell kids to keep them off the streets at night.

    Silly huh?

    • That's weird. Reminds me of this Finnish monster. I can't remember the name, but it's this succubus creature. A naked woman who walks around in the forest at night. You can tell it's her because she has backwards feet. But if you see her, you won't be able to escape, because she's too fast and will suck the life out of you. It's very scary, but doesn't seem to have much of a point.

    • Sigh. Yea... I know these are ridiculous stories but they still give me the chills.

      I forgot about this other story meant to make us eat dinner. They tell us that if we don't eat dinner, our souls would leave our body and open up the rice cooker for some rice. The lid to the rice cooker would close shut trapping our souls, killing us.

    • I suppose with the development of new technology, they'll need to invent more monsters? Zzat, a monster that lives in the electrical outlets and bites anyone who sticks metal objects into them?
