Stand a board on-end - the tip should come up to your mouth (nose if you're into freeriding; chin if you're into freestyle) - width should be no more than 1.5" shorter than your boot length, or it will interfere with turning, although you can space your bindings higher off your board to compensate - I'd actually recommend doing that, anyway, as padding between the deck/binding adds to greater control, imo.
