You're reading Do you think that American football players, so used to wearing all their protective gear, could handle Rugby or Aussie Rules football?

Australian Rules ruckmen are generally tall and rangy - 6 foot 4 is too short. However, ruckmen jump VERY high (and crash into each other) every few minutes. I doubt the Yanks would have the leap. And have you ever seen an Aussie Rules marking contest? Riding on opponents' or team mates' shoulders? They don't GET that high in NFL.

I don't understand the term "ruckman". I assume it is one who goes down the field and catches the ball since they are tall and lanky. I seriously doubt that the verticle leaping ability would be lacking in our wide receivers. In the NFL, you can't use a team mate as a base for jumping or be carried in any way. Ha ha, I know some players in the NFL that get pretty HIGH, they make the news when they get busted.

Ruckmen are the blokes that contest the bounces - a bit like a jump ball in basketball, except for the hard body contact. Actually, basketballers would probably be better at Australian Rules than American footballers, if they could stand the hits.

Oh, and you can't use a team mate as a base for jumping in Aus rules, either - they jump onto their mates (or opponents) shoulders, while said mate or opponent is standing upright, from the ground. Ruckmen aren't the main culprits for that caper, it's the half-forwards and full-forwards who do it.

I'm going to have to catch a game sometime and watch the subtle nuances of the game....may be able to do that with the crybabies in the NFL sitting out the season wanting more money. I've not seen it much since I was stationed in Korea (our English speaking cable provider was out of Australia, so we got a lot of soccer, Aussie Rules Football, and the show "Who Dares Wins".

Geez, that was a while ago - I assume you mean the program that was hosted by cricket legend Mike Whitney?
by Slartibartfast on March 14th, 2011
I don't remember who the host was, but it was back in 2000. People would get small sums of money for doing crazy dangerous crap like diving a shipwreck on their first time SCUBA diving or milking a Funnel Web Spider.

As a general rule I like spiders but those buggers scare me. I grew up in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney - you didn't dare go outside barefoot.
