Louis XVI of France had been dead (guillotined during the revolution) for ten years before the largest land deal in American history was finalized in 1803.

    • Right, I don't mean when it was sold to the Americans, but when it belonged to France. It was originally named for Louis IV when the French first owned it, but then they lost it to Spain. France took it back from Spain after the French Revolution, so why didn't they rename it?

    • NOT for Louis IV! That was long before the Louisiana territory. Probably Louis XIV.

    • You're right. That was a typo.
