Sure, but I think maybe that's a little different from what actually happens at AB HQ. The information on who rates who - via logs, etc - is available if and when the staff needs it.
A couple of years ago, I received a whole bunch of negative ratings over a short time span and asked Joel what happened, who it was, and so on. He checked the logs and found out that the DR's came from several different users. The point is, I had to bring it to his attention first. These guys don't sit around and watch us Bag all the time, because their primary job is running Answerbag - not so much making sure we all play nicely with each other.
Seems like I remember Joel saying last year that his goal was for Answerbag to grow into a user-policed website (or words to that effect). The staff relies on users and group dynamics, for the most part, to maintain a healthy atmosphere on AB. If unruly people cause too much mayhem and madness, then the staff will intervene, assuming someone flags the chaos first, of course.
That's why trolling goes on. Unless someone reports it, because AB is so big now, the staff will never know.
It's like a teacher (AB staff) watching over a playground full of kids (AB users) at recess - laughing, playing, yelling, running around, having fun. As long as everything's going well - no fights, for example - the teacher watches everyone, instead of focusing on a few kids and what they're are doing.
While the teacher's aware that a softball game's in progress here and a kickball game's going on over there, there's no need for him/her to get involved when Pattijo <grin> kicks the ball out of bounds or Jodie fumbles a grounder and gets laughed off the field. That might be a big deal to you and me, individually, but in the grand scheme of things, it's a typical day.
I hope this helps!

Very true--as of May 2007, we're averaging 5000-7000 ratings per day...with that kind of volume, we have to rely on users to alert us to questionable rating patterns.

Excellent! I particularly enjoyed the ball game comparison; I'd never thought of it that way.

Well it's good to know that someone sometimes is watching because I get so confused when I'm downrated but also get really enthusiastic responses from some of the AB community for the same question. It could make a gal crazy!
