In the UNITED STATES, why would someone spend MILLIONS to run for an office that only pays about $75,000.00 a YEAR (or thereabouts)?

    It's not their own money (for the most part) that they spend to get there. That gets them primed for doing the "job" once they're in office: spending other people's money.
