    • I am happy to learn you have given solitude and tranquility the due place in your lives as looking inwards with a purpose to realize our 'self' using meditation as a tool is perhaps the only mission with which we have taken birth as human beings.
Thank you very much for your answer, Major. +6.

    • Start working on it from now on, Major. It took me 6 years to close the other business while setting up the farm. It is a most rewarding noble life, the life of a farmer, where you do not harm anyone, but help all.
      All the best, Major.

    • The farm's been in my family for almost 250 years. I inherited it 35 years ago. I'll be taking it over from a hired manager when I retire from the Army.

    • That would make it all the more easier for you, Major. I had to buy the land, fence it, do the planting, arrange for watering of the saplings and wait till all the trees were grown and started yielding. You are lucky.

    • Yes. I consider that I hold it in trust for future generations. Since Meg and I cannot have children, it will eventually pass to a niece or nephew, whoever shows the greatest interest in care for the land. In the land title is a clause that prevents it from being broken up or used for anything other than a farm.

      Anonymous

by Anonymous on November 3rd, 2009

    • Thats a good clause. I will think about adding such a clause in my will, Major.
If my two sons are not interested in settling down in the farm for their retirement then I will say the farm must go to an Ashram. No change of land use will be permitted and the land cannot be sold. This sort of clause will make sure the trees I planted will stay alive and well. I will think about it and decide.

by Suby the Coat on November 3rd, 2009

    • Excellent choice. My great-grandfather put that clause in. I was able to buy back some of the land that had been sold off before that time; I added the same restriction to those deeds. What kind of tree crops do you grow? We have a commercial maple syrup/sugar business and an apple orchard. We are also growing some experimental oil-fuel crops (hybrid castor beans at present). We have a small-scale oil extraction and biodiesel conversion facility.

    • I have coconut palms, Mango and lemon trees mostly. Some rice paddy fields too. Then some milch cows.
I had first bought a small farm with a farm house. Then I bought up all available barren land around the farm and developed it. Its close to the river and an irrigation canal from the nearby dam runs on one side of the farm. So no water scarcity.
I have a small mini lake in the middle with wild trees planted around it. Migratory birds come here in winter from as far away as Siberia. We have some pelicans too coming here every year to breed. The birds have started arriving already and soon the trees will all have their nests. I stock the lake with live fingerling so that the birds don't leave in search of food.
A very pleasant way to spend the time in retirement.
I have a small private temple in the middle for my solitary moments. Can't imagine anything could be better for a post retirement life, Major.

    • Same problem, Major. I was drinking like a fish till 6 years ago. Then AA helped me arrest the alcoholism. Not sure how much damage has been done!

      Suby the Coat

by Suby the Coat on November 5th, 2009

    • Good for you! I didn't need it to stop, then moderate my drinking, but many do. AA does good work. My damage was from constant physical abuse in training and military operations. I'm still trying to force my body, at 53, to do what men in their 20s have to be in good shape to do.

    • But that will be punishing your body, Major. Do consult your Army Doctor before you decide on any regimen.
Once you settle down in your farm in 2 years from now - your farm activities alone will be enough to keep you in good shape. And pretty relaxing too.

    • Hello Suby. The fact that I am on active duty is the only thing keeping me alive right now. A chaplain explained to me that no serving general officer has committed suicide in over 100 years. That is all I would be remembered for if I did it. The thought of that dishonor is the only thing keeping me from joining Meghan. I've put away the pistol. I need to take Meg home to put her in our earth that she loved so dearly. Some fool doctor forced a tranquilizer shot on me. It was supposed to knock me out for 12 hours. I woke up in 3. My aide just told me that I don't have to identify the body after all, he did it for me. I want to remember lovely Meghan as she was.

This is the time when you need to be strong. I know life changes a lot when we loose our life partner with whom we planned to spend the rest of our lives. But you are an army man strong in mind. Take care. What more could I say. Fate has a funny way of playing tricks on us. All that we could do is to remain strong willed. Remain strong willed, Major.

Do feel free to post a comment here inviting me to chat. I am online mornings and evenings. I am sure you have enough people to help you out with the remaining things that must be done. Take it easy, Major. For want of nothing better to do for an option.

    • Major Tom: Here is the text of my appeal to AB Admin.
      '
      To: Answerbag Administrators.

Major Tom, AB user, lost his wife Meghan to an accident on the 5th Oct 2009.

I posted the condolence message in question & answer form which has received 139 condolence message answers and everyone who posted an answer is eager to see the Major through his tough trying times extending all moral support.

      http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/1796707

The Major who was initially contemplating suicide upon his wife's demise has been brought around to a much stabler state of mind by fellow ABers by engaging him in continuous dialog in AB comments threads.

The Major himself thanked and commented on all comments to the answers that my question received.

He also posted his own answser to the question on 7th November 2009 which too received numerous comments in condolence and encouragement.

      http://www.answerbag.com/a_view/8217532

The Major is taking his wife's body by a USAF aircraft to the US on the 9th Nov 2009.

He wishes to stay in touch with all ABers who helped him overcome his initial depression and suicidal tendencies during the long flight from Guam to Hanover NH. He has posted a comment to this effect.

"Avatar Major Tom Nov, 07 2009 at 10:20 AM
It can even stay in touch while in the air. Satellite uplink from radio operator. I'll update the GPS coordinates and my thoughts as we go."

For the purpose of communication with Answerbag friends he wished to set up a fresh comments thread and for that purpose he asked this question.

      http://www.answerbag.com/a_view/8221214

Now we see that the question has been flagged 'nonsense' by someone and stands 'rejected'.

It is the wish and desire of all the 139 ABers who offered him support at the time of Major Tom's trying moments that the question is reinstated so that we could stay in continuous contact with him as he flies half way across the globe to US with his wife Meghan's body.

I appeal that the Answerbag Administration considers this appeal favorably and reinstates this question by Major Tom.

    • Thanks Suby! I have posted a new question for the Major: http://www.answerbag.com/a_view/8224477 and emailed this to our dear friend so that if his original question/comment does not get reinstated, he can use my question as his thread.

by Sherri on November 7th, 2009

    • Thats fine, Sherri. I posted copy of my appeal here because AB always deletes copies of appeals to them if they find out. I have posted another copy under another question he answered. But in none of the main comments threads. I am hopeful the question will be reinstated. If not, your new thread could be used.
I think the Major has gone to bed. He has had no posting done in 4 hours.
      Lets wait!
      .
I saw your question, Sherri. If Major Tom's question was flagged by some troll as 'nonsense' yours too could be, as you have given details of the 'nonsensed' question in yours, Sherry.
Reinstatement of the original question could save the situation best, I supose. Or you will have to post a totally innocent looking question on aviation with only Major Tom's name and no links, to be on the safeside.

    • Sherri: Copy and paste my appeal to AB Admin and email that also to the Major. He has not been active in the AB for over 4 hours now. Your keeping in touch with him by Email is our best bet so that we could let him know the thread over which he could contact us.

    • Apparently the morons at AB Admin have "nonsensed" Sherri's question, too. I only get "404 error" when I try to access it. I'll make my commentary on my answer to the condolence question. I don't want anybody to get PBed over this. I don't care if they kick me off, but I don't want to be responsible for anyone else being harmed.

    • AB Admin, in my experience, can be quite stubborn and vindictive.

      Anonymous

by Anonymous on November 8th, 2009

    • AB Admin does nothing on its own, you could take my word for that, Major.
Someone deliberately flagged the question for the measly 5 points the flag will earn them. Otherwise the Admin has no way of keeping track of the thousands of questions being posted everyday.
It could possibly be the one person, whose answer to my question, I had flagged as offensive, because it WAS offensive. But do remember the answerer was Anonymous and is answer was removed by the AB staff in a matter of hours.
I am hopeful my appeal about your question will stay. Otherwise we will continue the chat under any one answer from the 139 of your choice. Or even this thread. Take your pick Major.
      .
How much time it will be before you board the aircraft?

by BigDaddyBS on November 8th, 2009

    • Did you read my appeal copied before submitting the the Admin and pasted here immediately after submitting. I had pasted it under the last answer the Major had posted at that time so that he would get to see it.
Now when it was reinstated where is the possibility of rejection again unless someone flagged it again? There was one answer to my question too which was offensive and I had flagged it spam/offensive. Is there any way you could find out who is repeatedly flagging that question?

      Suby the Coat

by Suby the Coat on November 8th, 2009

    • Nope. And it can't be the same person. Once you flag a question or answer, it grays out, and you can no longer flag it.
      .
Personally, I wish that once a question or answer was reinstated, that it could no longer be flagged - at least in the manner that was "corrected". (Wrong Category should be available at all times, unless you've already done it.)
      .
And, yes. I read it. I also appealed to Rich via email. Who knows which one(s) caused him to reinstate it, but obviously, there's little communication between admins & moderators in matters like this. Besides, Read it, Suby. It's not a question. It's not even an IMPLIED question.

      BigDaddyBS

by BigDaddyBS on November 8th, 2009

    • Thats true, BigDaddy. It is not a question anyway we look at it. Still the moderators were kind enough to reinstate it. But they should not have entertained a second nonsense flag.
      .
I think a good number of moderators are part-time college students. How else we could explain the point asked in this question of mine?
      http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/1790540
      .
A total of 17 flags moderating questions from 'outside the bag' to proper acceptable catergories were rejected. I appealed against the rejection by replying to the rejection slips. But no action taken this far. The questions continue to remain outside the bag.
