The Iranian leadership is using ploys like this and their nuclear ambitions to distract their people. The urban population in Iran is getting quite tired of rule by the mullahs. Deomgogery at its worst and most cynical.

No, they want to preserve themselves in power, but are not suicidal. Close parallel to situation in North Korea. If the Iranians go too far, Israel or the US will probably destroy their facilities. Israel did that to Iraq in 1982.
