    Many women erroneously believe that having a new baby protects you from getting pregnant. In fact, having unprotected sex after delivery carries the same risk as at any other time.

    It's possible to get pregnant almost immediately after giving birth, even before you start getting your period again.

    Time Frame

    Women ovulate about two weeks before their period starts. Depending on your cycle---which could have changed because of pregnancy---you could be ovulating within a few days of giving birth.

    Risks

    Because getting pregnant less than six weeks after giving birth is associated with increased risk of miscarriage and maternal infection, women should not have sex---even using birth control---for at least six weeks.

    Misconceptions

    Breastfeeding reduces your risk of getting pregnant, but doesn't make it impossible. If you have sex after your six-week postpartum appointment clears you to do so, be sure to use birth control, even if you are breastfeeding.

    Considerations

    Birth control methods such as the pill may take weeks or months to be fully effective. Use barrier methods, such as condoms or a diaphragm, to prevent pregnancy during your first month or two of birth control use.
