Starting from the point we're presently at, I'm not sure if we can be sustainable without some culling. There are too many people living, and I don't intend offering myself as a sacrifice.

Of course, we managed for millenia without recourse to fossil fuels, so we could maybe take a page out of the history book. I like the way that the Native American Indians lived, moving their home to suit their need. Life like that requires us to be much fewer in number, and to live alongside the rest of our world, rather than raping it, but it would ensure a happier life for those who lived it.

To wit: most of our worries today stem from money. Money is required when there are items you wish, or require, that you are not able to source yourself or barter other items for. The explosion in luxury items has meant we now live just to make money - for ourselves and our families - and that is where our stress appears. Yes, we have all the medical care, and fossil fuels allow us to make the plastics that help so much, but I reckon we put too much store on our own survival at all costs, letting everything else be wasted for our self-aggrandisement as a species.

I would like to see a world of small communities, mostly nomadic but with well fashioned housing to which they can retreat in times of need, trading as required with other communities at gathering markets where everyone can enjoy themselves and marriages take place between communities as accepted practice. The only overarching rule would be the population of any given community, with advisory and upper limits, say 100 advisory, and 110 upper, to allow some fluctuation. A group of communities would look to a shamanic style lawgiver, and the lawgivers of the much larger regions would meet at regular intervals in moot, where they would discuss pressing matters and reach agreements affecting all.

OK, so it's a little "Middle Earth", but our present systems aren't working. Thousands die and we continue to pump out the petro-chemicals and other hydro-carbon products while cutting down our forests and polluting our waters. We'll eventually return to isolation anyway, so why not structure it properly?

    Comments
    • The coming Bird Flu pandemic should take care of that population problem. I like the way you're thinking.
