What is the most northern desert before the Arctic region?

    There are some deserts I can think of that are on or just below the Arctic Circle:

    (1)
    The Greenland ice cap is a polar desert.

    (2)
    Another place is Baffin Island which is a very barren place much like the rest of the Canadan Arctic islands.

    (3)
    There is also another place along the Arctic Circle in northeastern Siberia that receives very little annual precipitation (less than 5 inches per year).


    But among the more famous deserts, the northern fringes of the Gobi would come closest to the Arctic.

    There are also some desert-like areas in the southern interior portions of British Columbia which is just as far north as the Gobi.
