Socks and shoes together can be hot. Sandals alone are cool and airy, but can allow dirt to get in and around your toes. There is nothing more disgusting than seeing someone's dirty, grungy, seemingly unkempt toes. Socks keep the feet clean, but at the same time allow for a measure of airiness not possible with a shoes and socks together.

I have NEVER heard of wearing sandals with socks as a 'Redneck' fashion statement. Unless of course you are referring to thongs or flip-flops. I suppose that might be a 'Redneck' thing. Wearing ankle socks (or 'no-shows') with athletic sandals (such as Jordans) is actually the OPPOSITE of 'Redneck' fashion. This is a look that has been cultivated by, but not limited to, young African-American men. I will agree with bewolff that sandals (while "airy") can allow for dirt and other materials to get on your feet and in between your toes. I will also agree that this is not a good look-I prefer to see socks with athletic sandals over bare, dirty feet in any kind of sandals any day
