Some libraries still have them due to financial reasons.

Retrospective Conversion of Library Catalogue holdings started somewhere in the late 1970's for early converters. Universities & Colleges were amongst the first to do it at first.

Many libraries have electronic catalogs with a print shelflist (card set similar to the old card catalogue) - some are kept for insurance purposes in case of loss of power.

I remember typing those card catalog cards at the age of 19 in vocational school. Yes I am a 24 year veteran of libraries.
