You're reading Why are the road traffic Ssgns in Wales first of al l in English and then in Welsh? Surely a nation that has its own unique language should use their own language first.

Ooo... Welsh is very much not dead. Its speaking population is growing. The 2001 census showed that almost a quarter of the population could understand spoken Welsh.

I just wish the same could be said for Gaelic. But the Scottish Parliament has made no attempts to promote it beyond putting a few signs up. (I'm just as guilty as I can't speak it either....).

I can't speak either Welsh or Gaelic but I have a bit of a grounding in Welsh pronunciation because I used to spend a lot of time walking and climbing in the Snowdonia National Park. I just think that we are a direct result of our history and the diversity of a tiny country like ours is unsurpassed anywhere in the world. I also believe we'll remain a country even if the nationalists in Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales get their way. We have more in common than we have with any other country. Compare the Auld Enemy with the Auld Alliance.
