Well, lots of things. Many, many people, myself included prefer to be alone some, or even the majority of the time. This isn't necessarily a bad thing - being able to enjoy one's own company and make one's own entertainment is actually quite a virtue, and many people who enjoy spending time alone are actually much more well adjusted than those who require constant social interaction.
Some people have unusual interests which not many people share, and therefore find it difficult to relate to those around them. Some people simply feel uncomfortable making small talk and conversation, or have little interest in the way conversations tend to go (lets face it there's only so much we get out of talking about the weather and asking pwople what they do for a living) - either they actively dislike it, or they find it difficult. Some people are just shy, or lack confidence either in certain company or company in general and so seek to avoid it - they may have felt rejected by society as a young person (perhaps bullying at school) this can sometimes grow up into a resentment of the society which has excluded them. Some people are actually exceptionally gifted in one or more areas, and find it difficult to meet people they can converse with on their own intellectual level. (Some people just think they're gifted, and don't want to waste time on their "inferiors"!)
Some people are actually willing to interact with society, but for being "odd" are shut out from it, and eventually withdraw and stop trying.
And then there are various mental disorders - too numerous to list, anything from autism to schizophrenia, which distort the way a person relates to others, and acts in society and can caus ethem to become a loner.
    So many reasons.

    • I think everyone feels like that sometimes. You'd be amazed how many people look like they're social butterflies who actually long for a friend who they could really be themselves with.

    • why can`t folk be themselfs if they don`t wanna be like other people and minger then why get angry over it forand also our society that we live in is controlling and power hungry and i think that the quiet ones know more than the louds mouths do.Why can`t a person live their odd life without being called crazy or be label with some mental disorder or something?Why/If they aren`t hurting u then don`t worry about it

    • This is the best! I absolutely agree in every aspect and every level. Also, sometimes people are fearful of whom they don't understand (hence the oddness) and so the "odd" person will feel left out, and they become more powerful by the time spent alone, & when they return to society , they are even more magnificent:) I believe this , because as we separate ourselves from what is "expected", we may become more in tuned with the spirit and soul..What is more beautiful then that? to not live in a world filled with lies, but staying true to yourself, when society is based on something so naive---manipulation and control . wealth and recognition.

    • WELL, in my case its this.

This goes for teens. i am 17 by the way.

maybe because you teens are idiots. Maybe because some of us rather be alone then be around you. Maybe your lack of mental thinking comprehension, ignorance, arrogance and overall stupidity of thinking the only kind of smart is good grades in school. Bull****. Maybe some people prefer to be alone, and some are outkasted, but in my case, I have lost faith in society, and I am confidence that due to the corrupt media, parents, and kids themselves, will be responsible for the downfall of this country, or heavily ongoing increase of stupidity in the next 20 years. You will maybe see teens like me 1 in a million. Realistically, 1 in 8000-18000. People say, well your 17, your opinion doesn't matter. I say "Hey, just because you were a fu**ing idiot when you were 17 doesn't mean I am, even though many teens probably are. Well, i hope you gain some understand from this, and understand my hatred. I will keep my less than 8 close friends and stick with that. Good-looking and smart.
Did you ever think, when somebody acts like they are better than MOST people, that maybe, rarely, it might be true? Usually not, but this time, it is. When I'm proved wrong, i thank the person for it, and begin listening to them. You won't here from a teen like me again.
