Why are many poor people so lazy?

    I imagine that lazy poor people are lazy for the same reasons that lazy rich people and lazy middle-class people are lazy, i.e., for any number of individual reasons.

    I don't know if it was your intention or not, but as an American I find this question very offensive. It has been fashionable in this country since the Reagan years to place blanket blame on poor people for their plight. There's this base assumption that the poor are lazy and they're all scamming the social welfare system.

    Aside from the fact that it is rarely, if ever, an exercise in accuracy to paint all of any group with the same brush, this attitude speaks to a fundamental lack of compassion that has become endemic to our society. Poor people in this country have become another "whipping boy" to allow the callous among us to feel good about themselves, their self-centeredness, their stinginess and their greed.

    The people living at or below the poverty line that I've come across during my life have never been lazy. Lord knows many of them should have had the right to be. Doing back-breaking work that most of us wouldn't sully our dainty hands with just to make the frayed ends of their daily existence meet. Struggling to keep their heads above water in the "land of plenty." Enduring the disdain of people who cannot see that "there but for the grace of God" go they.

    • No offense taken. First, know that my question was asked as a rebuttal to the question "Why are rich people lazy?". Lazy claims no class, rich or poor, exclusively. You have shown you care about the perception of poor people in your diatribe of the "American Way of Life". You have certainly given me a good verbal thrashing but it would be a collasal task to change the base assumption you noted. I was poor once upon a time, I lived out of a cardboard box, but I was not lazy.

    • Thanks for your comments, Lucky! I did wonder if there was something behind your question, which is why I gave the benefit of the doubt in saying that I was not assuming offensive intent on your part. I know that there are lazy poor people just as there are lazy people from all walks of life. But what I see American society becoming in regard to attitudes toward poverty is very disturbing to me. And I tend to get perhaps a bit overly passionate about it.

    • I would say so. Sen daschle wants to implement the ice floe program for us older folks. I feel a rebellion in the making and you can count me in!!

    • What a pile of crap. Lazy people are poor because they are lazy! if they were actually motivated they would have gone to college and or university to better their education to make more money to have a better life.

      It's obvious that you are just a poor person who is very bitter about her disposition. Do something about it.
