How can I choose a good full-suspension bike to be used on the trail and for transportation?

    Couple of quick points
    - If getting 2 sets of wheels and you have disk brakes, consider getting a set of standard 26 inch mountain bike wheels and a set of larger 'racer' c700 wheels - the extra size adds a lot of speed for road use and is well worth it. Tip: check they fit in your frame and forks!
    - Lockout isn't always necessary with suspension designs that remove 'bob' (although these are expensive) such as fox f100x forks and 5th element rear shocks. These are also better on the trail too.

    Overall though, it's better to have two bikes, if only because that wheel you buckled on the trail on Sunday won't stop you getting to work on Monday!

    When choosing full suspension bikes on a budget, I recommend going for the lower end of a high end range which is used in racing e.g. a marin quad design, specialised epic, trek fuel, etc. Don't go for any names not on the racing scene, as they're not taken seriously for very good reasons. If you're on a tight budget, get a second hand race machine thats a few years old - racers need to be pretty up to date, and it's so much more cost effective than a new lower-end one. Don't worry about high end components at all (although I'd definitely start with 27 gears as this can't really be upgraded easily later) - you can upgrade later to titanium pedals, brake lever shifters, disk brakes, and all that when mountain biking becomes your #1 passtime!
