You're reading Would you trade in your SUV under the 'cash for clunkers' scheme? SUVs are special purpose vehicles, don't you think?

We who live in the countryside find SUVs very useful, bolwerk. Thanks for the answer. +6.

I'm quite familiar with the "countryside." I didn't say they were completely useless, but even there few people really need one. My parents had a legitimate purpose in having one for their farm - but then again, few people have farms or live in the countryside....

Fat suburbanites who drive themselves around in them are obnoxious though.

You are right about the urban users of SUVs not really needing them.
But I happen to be a farmer living in the countryside. A Jeep and an SUV are the best we could have as we could transport a lot of things in them within the farm and to nearby places.

There really aren't that many urban users of SUVs, at least not in urban areas I'm familiar with. They're mostly popular as "luxury" vehicles for suburbanites. In urban environments themselves, the mileage is way too horrible for most drivers to afford them.

Poor inner city people are unlikely to own a car, but when they do, you find an interesting exception. They end up with used SUVs because they're cheap to buy, but expense to maintain.

Thats an interesting observation, bolwerk. Thanks.
