So what's the difference between genies and "demonic possession"? Aren't they both just handy excuses for the unknown? http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/8145862.stm

Yes they are handy excuses for the unknown. However, Genies or Djinn are not supposed to be exactly like Demons.

In Christianity, Demons are fallen Angels who are said to be led by Satan.

In Islam there is a third class of beings besides Humanity and Angels. These are Djinn who are supposded to be made from fire.

Some Djinn are good and others evil.Indeed some are said to be Muslims or Christians.

Iblis, the Muslim equivalent of Satan, was a Djinn, not an Angel. He was such a devout Muslim that he was raised to Heaven where he later rebelled.

Now he leads the Evil Djinn on Earth who reject Allah and fulfill the role of Demons in Christianity. There are no fallen Angels in Islam.

Djinn do not live in Hell as this is controlled by Angels.

In practice though, there is little difference between Demons and Djinn.
