Jesus IS God. Everything else you say is true though. The only way that Jesus' sacrifice could be a perfect atonement for the forgiveness of sins of believers, is if he were God. No finite man, no matter how perfect, can defeat infinite sin. Only an infinite God can defeat infinite sin. Jesus was with God before creation, is the Word of God, stated clearly that the Father and He are One. I really want you to understand this as your soul is at stake in this understanding. You need to believe that Jesus is the Son of God in order to be among those who will inherit the new earth.
